MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team survived a tough first game and went on to a 3-1 win over Wausau West in its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener Thursday at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers won 27-25, 26-6, 16-25, 25-14, to improve to 5-7 overall.
Miranda Forrest had 12 kills, three service aces and seven digs, Courtney Bauer added 10 kills and five blocks, and Sara Dasler had 18 assists and 10 digs for the Tigers.
Stephanie Rhodes added seven kills, Darian Molter had seven digs and Ellie Fehrenbach had nine assists for Marshfield.
“Things were a little shaky at times, but we’ve been through a lot of changes the last few weeks.,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “Hopefully, this will give us the confidence we need to play well at our tournament this weekend. Our two right sides, Ellie Fehrenbach and Lauren Gilbertson really stepped up when we needed them to tonight, and Courtney hit really well out of the middle.
“Obviously, we still have things to work on, but this gets us started toward our goal of winning the conference this season.”
The Marshfield volleyball team will be hosting a fundraiser Saturday for former player Tracey (Schulz) Fox, who recently found out she has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
The fundraiser coincides with the Marshfield Volleyball Invitational, a six-team, round-robin tournament that will be held at Marshfield High School starting at 9 a.m. and running until approximately 3 p.m.
Fox graded from Marshfield High School in 2004 and was part of the Tigers’ Wisconsin Valley Conference championship and WIAA state tournament qualifying team in 2003.
Money will be donated from concessions sold and from 50/50 raffles throughout the tournament to help Fox pay for her medical expenses. Scotty’s Pizza and Arby’s have donated food to be sold at the tournament.
Teams participating include Altoona, Marshfield, Medford, Rhinelander, Superior and Wauwatosa West.
