STEVENS POINT – Entering play Thursday, the Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer standings saw four teams tied for first place with 3-1 records. After Thursday, there are now two that stayed on top and Marshfield is one of them.

Matt McCann netted a hat trick, including a pair of goals in the second half, to help Marshfield pull away to a 5-3 win over Stevens Point on Thursday night at the Portage County Youth Soccer Complex.

Marshfield remains tied with Wisconsin Rapids on top of the Wisconsin Valley Conference standings with 4-1 records, while Point and Wausau West (which lost to Merrill), fall to 3-2. Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday at Griese Park at 5 p.m.

Point (4-4 overall) scored quickly, with Jordan Krush netting a goal just 1:33 into the game.

Marshfield surged ahead 3-1 as Alex Sainterme, Camilo Mesa and McCann scored in a 12-minute span.

Point retaliated with two quick goals, one by Neil Syran coming just 40 seconds after McCann’s score, and another by Marc Renfert 1:40 later.

The Tigers were able to keep Point in check in the second half and McCann did what he could to make sure Marshfield came out on top.

McCann scored at the 57:19 and 71:25 marks to provide the winning margin for Marshfield.

“It’s a big win for the kids,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “They wanted this one and they came out and played well. We had 18 shots, half of them on goal, which is good.”
