AUBURNDALE – The Spencer volleyball team went 4-1 and placed second at the Auburndale Invitational on Saturday at Auburndale High School.
The Rockets defeated Pittsville (25-21, 25-22), Auburndale (25-22, 25-23), Prentice (25-14, 25-14) and Iola-Scandinavia (25-11, 25-16) in two-game sweeps before losing to Mosinee 12-25, 25-17, 15-10, in the championship match.
“We played well all day until the last two games vs. Mosinee,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We just couldn’t pass the ball. Our attack was hard to stop when we passed well. Brooke Kettleborough was really clicking with all of the hitters today.”
Kettleborough had 102 assists in the five matches for the Rockets. Marisa Johnson led the offensive attack with 53 kills and five service aces, and added 62 digs on defense. Tynae Phillips had 31 kills, nine blocks and four aces, and Lindsey Vaughan had a team-high 75 digs for Spencer.
Auburndale defeated Iola-Scandinavia, Pittsville, Prentice and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption to also finish 4-1 and take third.
Camille Swart had 30 kills and Shannon Yahnke added 27 for the Apaches. Kendra Kundinger led Auburndale with 56 assists and 40 digs.
Auburndale plays at Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday.

Spencer returns to Cloverbelt Conference East Division action Tuesday at Colby.
