Wausau Newman Catholic storms back to beat Auburndale volleyball

WAUSAU – The Auburndale volleyball team’s bid toward another Marawood Conference South Division title took an early-season hit Tuesday.

The Apaches won the first two games against Wausau Newman Catholic, but could not hold on and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cardinals.

Newman won 22-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-8, to knock Auburndale to 2-1 in the conference with three matches remaining on the conference schedule. Newman improves to 2-1.

Auburndale has won or tied for 10 South Division championships in the 13 years since the Marawood split into two divisions, including last year.

Shannon Yahnke had 16 kills and Kendra Kundinger had 17 assists to lead the Auburndale offense.

Hannah Castellano had 23 digs, Kundinger added 18 and Camille Swart had eight kills for the Apaches.

Auburndale will play a nonconference match at home against Rib Lake on Thursday and will compete in the Berlin Tournament on Saturday.
