WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team has found its nemesis in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this season and it is Wausau West.

West knocked off Marshfield for the second time this season – the only two losses the Tigers have suffered in the conference – by winning 2-1 in overtime Thursday at West High School.

Taylor Penn scored 5:23 into overtime to lift the Warriors (5-5-1, 4-3 Wisconsin Valley Conference) to the victory.

Marshfield falls to 10-3-2 and 5-2 in the WVC. Second-place Wisconsin Rapids had its game vs. Stevens Point on Thursday postponed due to a thunderstorm.

Matt McCann scored 4:15 into the game to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead, but that was all they could muster. West allowed just two more shots on goal to Marshfield the rest of the way.

“They were marking us man-to-man with a deep sweeper,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “We had major congestion in the center of the field.

“We sat back on our heels. West wanted it more and you could see how they played in the second half.”

Jake Adams tied the game for the Warriors 4:47 into the second half and it remained tied until the OT goal.

Marshfield is back in action Tuesday at home against Wausau East.
