ABBOTSFORD – The Spencer volleyball dropped just one game in seven matches Saturday to win the Bud Nelson Invitational for the fourth year in a row.
The Rockets defeated Loyal/Granton (25-13, 25-13), Waupaca (25-20, 25-17), Wisconsin Valley Lutheran (25-13, 25-20), Colby (25-18, 23-25, 15-13), Abbotsford (25-16, 25-18), Stratford (25-13, 25-17) and Marshfield Columbus Catholic (25-14, 25-9) to take the tournament title.
Stratford tied with Waupaca and Abbotsford for second with 5-2 records. Loyal/Granton and Colby tied for fifth at 3-4, Columbus was sixth at 1-6 and Wisconsin Valley Lutheran finished 0-7.
“It was a long day at the end of a long week,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “There were some letdowns during the day, but they pushed through them.”
Tynae Phillips had 58 kills and 10 blocks, Marisa Johnson had 51 kills, 11 service aces and 77 digs, and setter Brooke Kettleborough had 124 assists in the seven matches for Spencer.
Macie Webber added 44 kills, 10 blocks and six aces, Kallie Reckner chipped in with 41 assists and Lindsey Vaughan had a team-high 102 digs for the Rockets.
Stratford and Columbus Catholic statistics were not provided.
Spencer hosts Gilman and Columbus is at home against Augusta in Cloverbelt Conference East matches on Tuesday. Stratford plays a Marawood Conference South match at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, also on Tuesday.
