MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team stands on the verge of making school history.
The Tigers whipped D.C. Everest 5-0 on Tuesday at Griese Park, improving to 8-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference (15-3-2 overall). With the win, Marshfield needs just one more victory to ensure a share of the conference title and with wins in its final two games – Oct. 8 at home against Stevens Point and Oct. 10 at Wisconsin Rapids – the Tigers would win the title outright.
Marshfield shared the WVC championship in 2005, but has never won the conference title in boys soccer outright.
“We started out a little sluggish and I thought that D.C. Everest, in the first 3-7 minutes, put some nice passing together,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “Our kids picked it up and turned on the pressure. They went out there with confidence and I think Everest’s passing kind of took them by surprise.”
Camilo Mesa scored at the 18:14 mark off an assist by Chris Pahl, and Alex Babinski added a goal 7 minutes late on an assist from Austin Gilbert to put the Tigers up 2-0 at halftime.
“At halftime we talked about putting this one away early,” Todryk said. “We wanted to go out there and get a couple of goals in the first 10 minutes, and they did.”
Matt McCann scored 1:36 into the second half and Gilbert scored on another assist by Pahl 5 minutes later to make it 4-0.
McCann added the game’s final goal on a pass from Nathan Law with 10:15 remaining.
Matt Brown had four saves in goal for the Tigers, who are off until the matchup with Stevens Point on Oct. 8.
Marshfield won a pair of nonconference games at the Rhinelander Invitational on Saturday, beating Rhinelander 5-0 and Menomonie 3-1.
