WAUSAU – Marshfield had a second-place finish and two third-place finishes to end up fourth at the 2013 Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Tennis Meet on Wednesday at Wausau East and West high schools.
The fourth-place finish allowed Marshfield to finish in a tie for second overall (combining points from the tournament and the regular season) with Wausau East. Stevens Point won the tournament and the overall conference title for the first time since 2004.
Kessa Schreiner, the No. 4 seed at No. 3 singles, led the way for the Tigers.
Schreiner upset top seed Madison DeBot of Stevens Point 7-5, 7-5, in the semifinals before losing in a marathon championship match to Kenzie Bradley of D.C. Everest 6-4, 6-7 (6), 10-4.
Marshfield’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams each took third.
The No. 2 team of Olivia Haessly and Emily Seidel were the top seed, but were upset in the semifinals. The Tigers’ duo came back to beat Kristin Houle and Nicole Williams of D.C. Everest 6-1, 6-4 to claim the third-place match.
Emily Ott and Autumn Packard took third at No. 3 doubles for Marshfield, beating Hanna Cohrs and Rachel Bayer of Merrill 6-2, 6-4.
The Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Jenny Madden and Emily Serchen, and Alley Pue at No. 4 singles finished fifth, while Lara Prebble and Martha Kupfer finished sixth at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 subsectional Monday at Stevens Point.
