MARSHFIELD – For the first time in school history, Marshfield is the sole champion in boys soccer in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
Marshfield defeated Stevens Point 3-1 on Tuesday at Griese Park, and combined with Wausau West’s loss to Wausau East on Monday, clinches the conference title for the Tigers. Marshfield had shared the Valley title in 2005.
Marshfield improves to 16-3-2 overall and 9-2 in the WVC with Thursday’s game at Wisconsin Rapids remaining. Stevens Point finishes its regular-season schedule with a 5-10 record and a 4-8 mark in the Valley.
Alex Sainterme scored just 44 seconds into the game and Matt McCann added a goal at the 24:48 mark to put Marshfield up 2-0.
Point cut the Tigers’ lead in half with a goal by Chrisian McDonald before halftime, but Marshfield kept Point scoreless the rest of the way.
Sainterme added his second goal 15 minutes into the second half to complete the scoring.
“We had the potential to shake up the conference and we actually put it together,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “The kids worked hard all season and accomplished one of the goals were set before the season.”
