WISCONSIN RAPIDS – With four matches to go in the season, the Marshfield volleyball team had its destiny in its own hands. Win out, and the Tigers would do no worse than a share of the Wisconsin Valley Conference title.
First up was conference-leader Wausau East in the opening match of the second Wisconsin Valley Conference Tournament of the season.
The Tigers gave their all, but couldn’t pull out a second win against East this season and lost 25-21, 13-25, 27-25, 11-25, 15-9. Marshfield went on to beat Wausau West 25-11, 25-16, 25-11, in its second match and now stand at 7-3 in the Valley.
Marshfield wraps up its regular season with a pair of matches next week. The Tigers host Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday and finish up at D.C. Everest on Thursday.
“The match against Wausau East was to be expected – a good one,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “We came out ready to play and probably should have taken set 1 or set 3, so we didn’t have to go to set 5. I’m proud of how the girls regrouped and dominated the Wausau West match.”
Miranda Forrest had 25 kills and 24 digs, Courtney Bauer added 23 kills and Ellie Fehrenbach had 17 kills for Marshfield.
Darian Molter led the Tigers with 41 digs and added seven service aces, Chelsea Akin had a team-high 10 aces and 20 digs, and setters Sara Dasler and Anna Ripp had 45 and 29 assists, respectively.
“As we close out conference play this week, we will continue to work on our consistency,” Sadowska said. “I am sure we will meet up with Wausau East again, hopefully at home in the sectional final.”
East and Stevens Point each went 3-0 on Saturday to pull ahead of Marshfield in the standings.
