MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys soccer team had to go into its WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal without top goal scorer Sean McCarthy.

McCarthy, who didn’t play due to illness, wasn’t missed. The Dons scored seven times in the first half – four times in the first 19 minutes – to blow past Tri-County 11-0 on Tuesday at Griese Park.

Columbus Catholic, the No. 2 seed in its half of Sectional No. 1 in the Division 4 field, will host Gresham/Bowler on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Griese Park.

“It’s one-and-done (in the playoffs), you never know what you’re going to get, so I’m very glad we got the victory and were able to rest some key players,” Columbus Catholic coach Jeff Edwards said. “We knew we had to have some other juniors and seniors come up and show up today, and they did.”

Jared Fleischmann scored five goals, four in the first half, and Christian Payant added three goals for the Dons (12-7).

Payant had goals at the 3:28 and 13:06 marks of the first half, and Fleischman scored twice in the first 18:42 to put Columbus up 4-0 before the first half was half over.

Fleischmann added two more goals by halftime and scored 54 seconds into the second half, making it 8-0.

Alexandra Hutchison, Christian Payant and Charles Payant added goals in the final 15 minutes before the game ended at the 60-minute mark due to the Dons’ 10-plus goal lead.

“It does help that we have more than one guy that can score a goal in a game,” Edwards said. “We moved Christian up to midfield today to try to get some goals early and put them on their heels, and it ended up paying off for us.”
