MARSHFIELD – Sean McCarthy returned from illness and an ankle injury to post a hat trick and two assists, leading the Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team to a 5-1 win over Gresham/Bowler in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Thursday at Griese Park.
McCarthy scored three goals and assisted on the Dons’ two others by Will Atkinson and Alexandra Hutchison as Columbus built a 5-0 halftime lead.
Columbus Catholic (13-7), the No. 2 seed in its half of the Sectional No. 1 bracket, will play at No. 1 seed Stevens Point Pacelli (23-0) in a Division 4 sectional semifinal next Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Portage County Soccer Complex.
Pacelli defeated Columbus twice during the Mid-State Soccer Conference regular season this fall.
Evan Hansen had five saves in goal for the Dons.
