STRATFORD – The Stratford boys basketball team dropped its season opener, falling 53-49 to Cheqaumegon in a nonconference game Thursday at Stratford High School.
Chequamegon led 27-14 at halftime before the Tigers made a strong run in the second half. Stratford outscored the Screaming Eagles 35-26 in the second half before coming up four points short.
A.J. Strasser had 13 points and 13 points, Jake Reif added 13 points and Michael Bargender had 11 points and 16 rebounds for Stratford.
Stratford shot just 28 percent from the field and was 0-16 from 3-point range in the loss.
Chequamegon improves to 2-0 this season. Complete statistics for Chequamegon were not provided.
Stratford plays at Pittsville in its Marawood Conference South Division opener Monday.
