Spencer boys basketball uses second-half surge to blast Greenwood

SPENCER – Spencer shot a sizzling 53 percent from the field and used a huge second half to blow past Greenwood 77-51 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Tuesday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets led 32-30 at halftime before exploding to a 45-21 advantage over the final 16 minutes to roll to the victory and improve to 2-0 overall and in the conference this season.

Joe Meyers scored 20 points to lead four Spencer players in double figures. Jeremiah Cattanach added 17, Bobby Pilz had 12 and Calvin Lenz chipped in 10 for the Rockets.

Spencer led 38-37 midway through the third quarter before closing on a 14-0 run that included two straight baskets by Meyer.

After a free throw by Greenwood, Spencer ripped off eight more in a row to go up 60-38.

Spencer missed all six of its 3-point attempts but still shot 32 of 60 from the field and was helped by a solid 13-for-16 performance at the free-throw line.

Dillon Serocki led Greenwood (1-1 overall and Cloverbelt East) with 24 points and Booker Bredlau had 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Rockets now have more than a week off before returning to action Dec. 5 at home against Owen-Withee.
