STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys basketball team hung around for 2½ quarters against Stevens Point, the No. 7-ranked Division 1 team in the Wisconsin state coaches poll, but a hot streak by the Panthers helped them pull away to a 60-45 win on Friday night at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

Stevens Point outscored Marshfield 13-6 over the final 3½ minutes of the third quarter to turn a tie game into a 44-37 lead after three.

Sam Hauser made a 3-pointer and a jumper, and Kirien Sprecher-Katzmarek added a 3-pointer in an 8-0 run to put SPASH (5-1, 2-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) up 39-31.

Jeff Allison countered with a 3-pointer to stop the run for Marshfield, but a three-point play by Trevor Anderson with 3 seconds left in the quarter put the Panthers ahead 44-37.

Marshfield (3-3, 1-1 WVC) couldn’t turn the tide in the fourth quarter, turning the ball over three times in its first four possessions and SPASH went up by as many as 19 points.

Stevens Point outscored the Tigers 16-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Anderson and Hauser each had 18 points for Stevens Point

Marshfield led much of the first half behind 12 points from Matt Oestreich, who ended up with 18. The Tigers led 22-21 before a 3-pointer late in the half gave the Panthers a 24-22 lead at the break.
