AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale boys basketball team survived its first scare of the season, holding on to defeat Wausau Newman Catholic 39-35 in a Marawood Conference South Division game Friday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale led 23-15 at halftime and 32-23 after three quarters before Newman chipped away, but the Apaches held on.
Auburndale is now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Marawood South, while Newman moves to 4-3 and 2-2 in the conference.
Blake Anderson had 12 points, and Zach Staats and Josh VanShoick each added 10 for Auburndale.
The Apaches made just 8 of 19 free throws in the game and were 3 of 15 from 3-point range.
Dane Fronek had 14 points and six rebounds for Newman.
Auburndale returns to action Thursday at Pittsville.
