GILMAN – Spencer built a big lead, then had to hold on in the fourth quarter before beating Gilman 53-48 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Friday night at Gilman High School.
Spencer led 41-26 after three quarters, but the Pirates outscored the Rockets 22-12 in the fourth quarter to pull within five by the end.
The win helps the Rockets keep pace with Marshfield Columbus Catholic on top of the Cloverbelt East standings. Both won Friday night to improve to 6-1 in the conference. Owen-Withee (5-1) did not play. Spencer is also 6-1 overall. Gilman drops to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Jeremiah Cattanach had 22 points, making 8 of 11 shots from the field, to lead Spencer. Bobby Pilz added 10 points.
Tyler Amborn scored 24 points for Gilman.
Spencer’s scheduled game at home against Phillips on Monday has been postponed due to school being closed because of cold weather. The game has been rescheduled to Feb. 3. Spencer’s next game is now next Thursday at Colby.
