MARSHFIELD – West Salem held off a late charge by Marshfield in a wild third period to win 4-2 in a nonconference boys hockey game Friday night at the Marshfield Youth Ice Recreation Arena.

West Salem (10-3) led 1-0 on a goal by Bailey Martin in the first period. The score held that way until Martin scored again at the 9:35 mark of the third period.

That goal was the first of five over the final 7:25 of the game.

Michael Berghefer made it 3-0 before Bryce Gadke and Zach Leggon scored for Marshfield in a span of 1:43.

However, Marshfield (3-10-1) couldn’t score again and Taylor Trapp added a power-play, empty-net goal with 3 seconds remaining to put it away.

Brad Krueger saved 42 shots for Marshfield.

Marshfield plays at Wausau East on Monday at Marathon Park in Wausau.
