Augusta upsets Spencer boys basketball

SPENCER – Augusta outscored Spencer by 14 in the fourth quarter, storming back to upset first-place Spencer 52-41 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Friday night at Spencer High School.

Spencer trailed 11-6 after the first quarter, then outscored the Beavers in both the second and third quarters to take a 29-26 lead heading into the fourth.

Augusta outscored Spencer 26-12 over the final 8 minutes to pull off the upset and improve to 5-7 overall and 5-4 in the Cloverbelt East. Spencer falls to 7-2 overall and in the conference.

Augusta made 19 of 30 free throws, while Spencer was just 9 of 16 at the line and 14 of 57 from the field (24.6 percent).

Brandon Kimball scored 13 points and Marshall Mayer added 12 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Beavers.

Jeremiah Cattanach had 18 points and seven rebounds for Spencer, but was only 7 of 21 shooting from the field.

Spencer plays at Greenwood next Thursday.
