SPENCER – Spencer trailed by one point at halftime before rallying to knock off Granton 75-66 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division boys basketball game Friday night at Spencer High School.
The win, combined with Columbus Catholic’s loss to Neillsville, gives Spencer sole possession of third place in the Cloverbelt East with a 9-2 record (9-3 overall). The Rockets remain ½ game behind Neillsville and Owen-Withee in the conference standings.
Granton falls to 2-12 overall and 0-11 in the conference. The Bulldogs have lost 89 straight games in the Cloverbelt East. Their last win was Jan. 29, 2009, against Neillsville.
Mitchell Susa had 26 points and four steals, and Bobby Pilz added 19 points and four steals for the Rockets.
Spencer shot just 32 percent (23 of 71), but made up for that with a strong performance at the free throw line, making 26 of 37 (70 percent).
Garnton led 31-30 at halftime but Spencer responded with 45 second-half points to pull out the victory.
Spencer plays at Owen-Withee on Monday and at Loyal on Tuesday.
