AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team was held to just 31 percent shooting and came up just short, losing to Wausau Newman Catholic 46-43 in a Marawood Conference South Division matchup Friday night at Auburndale High School.
The Apaches made just 13 of 41 shot attempts but stayed in the game with a strong performance from the free throw line. Auburndale was 17 of 25 on free throws to stay within reach.
Newman led 29-24 at halftime and pushed its lead to seven after three quarters.
Auburndale closed the gap in the fourth, but came up just short.
Shannon Yahnke and Taylor Gotz each scored 13 points to lead Auburndale (6-7, 4-3 Marawood South).
Newman Catholic improves to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Auburndale returns to action Monday at Abbotsford.
