MARSHFIELD – One run got the Marshfield girls basketball team back from an early deficit and another one pushed it to victory on Friday night at The Boson Company Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers used a 9-0 run in the first half to stay in the game and closed the contest on an 11-0 run to defeat Stevens Point Area Senior High 50-39 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup Friday night.
The victory keeps Marshfield in the WVC race as it improves to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Tigers remain two games behind first-place D.C. Everest (15-1, 7-0 WVC) as Marshfield hosts DCE on Tuesday.
Stevens Point falls to 2-13 and 1-6 in the conference.
With the game tied 39-39 following a 7-0 run by SPASH that ended with Taylor Beadles fifth 3-pointer of the game, Marshfield closed out the final 4:05 on an 11-0 run to grab the victory.
McKayla Scheuer, who had a team-high 14 points for Marshfield, started the run with a basket and the Tigers made 5 of 9 free throws over the final 1:19 to pull away.
Stevens Point missed its final six shots and turned the ball over three times over the final 4 minutes.
“We only had six turnovers, and none in the second half, and that’s a positive, we outrebounded them (31-18) quite handily and that’s a positive,” Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said. “I thought Scheuer came in and gave us an offensive spark and some other people did some good things. I just think that sometimes we find a way to put ourselves in a bad situation.
“They knocked down some 3’s at some opportune times and Point played hard on the defensive end. For whatever reason, we can’t get open looks, our shooters can’t compared to everyone else, and that’s a frustration to me. It’s something we have to continue to work on.”
Marshfield led 7-3 early only to see SPASH pull out to a 15-11 lead as Abby Bohanski and Beadles each hit a pair of 3-pointers over the first 10 minutes.
Marshfield used a 9-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to pull ahead 20-15 before the Panthers closed the half by scoring the final eighth points to take a 23-20 advantage going into halftime.
Marshfield chipped away and led 33-32 after three quarters following a basket by Kailey Hubler late in the period, then raced out to score the first six points of the fourth before SPASH scored seven straight to tie it again. Beadles, who finished with a game-high 17 points, had a 3-pointer with 4:31 left, but those were the final points for the Panthers.
“We’re happy to get another win and it’s another tight game that we won down the stretch and that’s a good thing for us,” Michaelis said. “I don’t know why we start so slowly and I don’t know why we have such bad moments. We don’t necessarily smell blood in the water and put someone away. That’s something we need to do a better job of, but we got the win and we’re still in a race and have Everest here on Tuesday. That’s what we want.”
Ellie Kummer added 11 poitns and Ellie Fehrenbach had 10 for the Tigers.
Marshfield hosts D.C. Everest at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
