MARATHON – Stratford won eight individual titles and rolled to the team title Saturday at the 2014 Marawood Conference Wrestling Tournament at Marathon High School.
The Tigers racked up 253.5 points, more than 100 points better than second-place Phillips (146.5). Auburndale was sixth among the eight teams with 92 points.
The conference title is the sixth for Stratford and first since 2011. The Tigers also won four straight titles from 2000-2003.
Earning individual titles for Stratford were Sam Wenzel (106 pounds), Anthony Gliniecki (113), Phil Sersch (120), Alex Heiden (126), Anthony Marten (132), Kellen Bornbach (170), Kamren Bornbach (182) and Hunter Kauffman (220).
Dondrick Tackes, Stratford’s normal 195-pound wrestler and the top-ranked 195-pounder in Division 3 in Wisconsin, did not wrestle in the tournament.
Wenzel, Gliniecki and Kauffman won championship matches with pins. Gliniecki is now 33-1 and Kauffman is 32-2 this season.
Sersch, Heiden and Kamren Bornbach each notched their 30th wins of the season by winning their championship matches.
Auburndale also had two champions.
Paul Willfahrt defeated Austin Engel of Athens 4-1 to win the 138-pound match and Wyatt Weiler improved to 28-4 on the season with a pin of Stratford’s Taylor Krall in 3:26 in the 152-pound title match.
Stratford is at Athens in a dual meet on Tuesday.
Auburndale and Stratford will compete in the WIAA Division 3 regional on Feb. 15 at Edgar.
