WAUSAU – Wausau Newman Catholic held Stratford to one basket in the second quarter to open up a double-digit lead and it went on to a 58-30 victory over the Tigers in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Thursday at Newman Catholic High School.
The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter before the Cardinals used a 12-2 run in the third to go up by 10.
Newman Catholic closed the game with a 21-9 fourth quarter, making 9 of 14 free throws in the period. Chloe Champman scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals.
With the win and a loss by Wisconsin Rapids Assumption to Marathon, the Cardinals (13-3 overall) pull into a tie for first place in the Marawood South at 8-1. Marathon is now 7-1.
Emily Hauke had 10 points to top the Tigers.
Stratford falls to 6-9 and 2-6 in the conference.
Stratford’s next game is Friday at Northland Lutheran.
