Stratford senior wrestler Dondrick Tackes garnered 1,735 of the 3,200 votes to win the WDLB-WOSQ Radio/MarshfieldAreaSports.com January Athlete of the Month voting.
Tackes won the 195-pound championship at the D.C. Everest Invitational on Jan. 11 as he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Wrestler after going 5-0. He is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Division 3 in the state at 195 pounds by the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association and wiwrestling.com.
Other nominees for the January award were Luke Zuiker of Marshfield boys basketball, Stephany Heggemeier of Owen-Withee girls basketball and Blake Anderson of Auburndale boys basketball.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award, which will be given out monthly from September 2013 through May 2014: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp. An Athlete of the Year award will be chosen by WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com staff in June.
Winners of the monthly award, and the Athlete of the Year, will be presented an award from Burt Awards.
