AUBURNDALE – The Marathon girls basketball team couldn’t have come into Tuesday’s game at Auburndale any hotter, having knocked off state-ranked Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Wausau Newman Catholic last week.
The Apaches were able to cool them off, pushing out to a nine-point halftime lead and holding on for a 57-53 win in a Marawood Conference South Division game Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale (10-7, 7-3 Marawood South) led 28-19 at halftime before Marathon chipped away but couldn’t catch up to the Apaches.
Marathon is now 15-2 and 8-2 in the conference.
Kendra Kundinger had 12 points, Shannon Yahnke added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Allison Linzmeier chipped in with 10 points for Auburndale.
Morgan Wirkus and Emily Kind each had 15 points to top Marathon.
Auburndale hosts Stratford on Friday.
