EDGAR – Stratford had eight individual champions and 10 overall sectional qualifiers as it rolled to the team title at the 2014 WIAA Division 3 wrestling regional on Saturday at Edgar High School.
Stratford moves on to the WIAA team sectional on Tuesday at Manawa.
The 10 Tigers who finished first or second on Saturday will compete at the WIAA Division 3 individual sectional on Feb. 22 at Shawano. The top three finishers in each weight class at the sectional qualify for the 2014 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 27-March 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Winning individual titles for Stratford were Sam Wenzel (106 pounds), Anthony Gliniecki (113), Alex Heiden (126), Anthony Marten (132), Kellen Bornbach (170), Kamren Bornbach (182), Dondrick Tackes (195) and Hunter Kauffman (220).
Phil Sersch (120) and Taylor Krall (152) had to win second-place wrestlebacks to clinch spots in the sectional. Sersch pinned Scott Schooley of Pittsville and Krall took down Nathan Neumann of Spencer in 3:45.
Auburndale had a pair of champions and three others that finished second to qualify for sectionals.
Paul Willhahrt (138) and Wyatt Weiler (152) won championships for the Apaches. Dylan Altmann (106), Kurt Jankowski (182) and Kaleb Bolder (285) each finished second.
Bolder won a second-place wrestleback, pinning Bryce Murray of Stratford in overtime.
Spencer had three wrestlers move on to sectionals after each finished second.
Trevor Ackman (145), Zach Schneider (170) and Max Johnson (220) will participate in the sectional for the Rockets.
Schneider lost 2-1 to Kellen Bornbach and Johnson was pinned by Kauffman in 1:01.
