Marshfield girls basketball team’s upset bid falls short at Superior in WIAA Division 1 regional final

SUPERIOR – The Marshfield girls basketball team were primed for an upset before Superior showed why it is the No. 1 seed in the sectional and a favorite to make a return trip to the state tournament.

Marshfield led by five points late in the third quarter before Superior closed out the game on a dominating 30-9 run and pulled out a 67-51 victory over the Tigers in a WIAA Division 1 regional final Saturday night at Superior High School.

The Tigers had their 10-game winning streak snapped and end the season with a 16-8 record.

Superior (21-3) moves on to play D.C. Everest (22-2) in a sectional semifinal Thursday at Eau Claire Memorial. Superior defeated Everest 69-46 earlier this season. Everest’s only other loss this season came to Marshfield.

Marshfield 29-26 at halftime and after Superior scored the first two baskets of the third quarter, the Tigers ripped off a 16-4 run to take the lead.

Ellie Kummer had two straight 3-pointers and Ema Fehrenbach scored to put Marshfield up 42-37 with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter.

The next eight possessions changed the game.

Marshfield made 1 of 11 field goal attempts while Superior scored all eight times it had the ball. The 17-2 run put Superior up 54-44 with 5 minutes left in the game.

Marshfield closed to within six after baskets by Kailey Hubler and Caitlin Michaelis, but failed to score fo the next 3:45 and the Spartans closed out the game.

Superior scored 13 straight points to go up by 19 before Natalie Zuelke had a three-point play in the final seconds for the Tigers.

Kummer finished with 15 points, Zuelke added 11, McKayla Scheuer had nine and Michaelis chipped in with eight for Marshfield.

Jessica Lindstrom had 22 points, Alyssa Correll had 21 points and Hailey Kotney had 15 for the Spartans.

Note: Marshfield junior guard Caitlin Michaelis has climbed into seventh place on the Tigers’ all-time scoring list after compiling 271 points this season. Her career total of 872 is seventh and just three points behind Janelle Tomlinson’s 875 accumulated from 1996-2000. Taylor Varsho (2008-12) is the all-time leading scorer with 1,370 points…Ellie Fehrenbach suffered a knee injury in the second quarter and was unable to return. Coach Heidi Michaelis said it is serious but will not require surgery. Fehrenbach finished her junior season with 231 points and climbed into 17th on the all-time scoring list with 573 career points.
