WAUSAU – Wausau East scored three unearned runs in the first two innings and that was all it needed as Olivia Zipperer tossed a five-hit shutout to beat Marshfield 3-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference softball game Monday.

Marshfield committed seven errors in the loss and all three runs East scored were a result of the Tigers’ poor defense.

Marshfield is now 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. East is 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

“Early in the season our defense bad been pretty solid, but tonight, with seven errors, you aren’t going to win many games,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We had chances to score, we had bases loaded one inning, but we couldn’t get the big hit. We’re going to continue to work on making contact and making the other team play defense.”

Zipperer struck out nine and walked two to earn the victory for East.

Kayla Kluge and Miranda Baierl combined to allow just three hits on the mound for Marshfield.

Jessi Lyon had two of the Tigers’ five hits.

Marshfield plays at WVC doubleheader at Merrill on Tuesday.
