MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team finally had its 2014 home opener and it ended with a thrilling 5-4 win over Wausau East in nine innings Thursday at Central Wisconsin Fairgrounds.

Marshfield’s Autumn Slowiak ripped a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to score Kayla Kluge and Miranda Baierl with the tying and game-winning runs.

Marshfield led 3-0 after three innings before East battled back and tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh.

East went ahead with an unearned run in the top of the ninth, only to see the Tigers rebound and grab the victory.

Marshfield is now 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. East suffered its first conference loss and falls to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

“We had six errors, but only one led to an unearned run, so they didn’t hurt us too much,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “We came up with some big plays on defense, throwing out a runner at home, and both Katie Treankler and shortstop and Jessi Lyon at third played an outstanding game.”

Kluge picked up the win with two innings of relief.

Olivia Zipperer, who shutout the Tigers on Monday, had 14 strikeouts, but gave up 10 hits and five walks in suffering the loss.

Marshfield plays at first-place and undefeated D.C. Everest on Friday.
