MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 3-0 loss to Ashland in a nonconference game Friday at Griese Park.
Marshfield had six shots on goal, all saved by Ashland goalie Hanna Zeis.
Ashland, which is now 17-1-2 and a No. 1 seed in Division 3 Sectional 1, scored twice in the first half on goals by Hayley Hein.
Tori Johnson added the Oredockers’ third goal 13:35 into the second half.
Ashland reached the state tournament in Division 2 last year.
“We allowed their forwards to get behind us once and centered the ball another time and the third goal was a fluke goal we should have had,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said.
“Overall I was pleased with the defense as many players saw time to prepare for the playoffs. We can clean up some things that lead to goals. We saw Emily Critelli get more comfortable in goal and made some nice saves, and come out on the ball nicely.”
Marshfield is the No. 2 seed in the bottom half of the WIAA Division 2 Sectional 1 bracket and will host No. 7 Merrill in a regional semifinal Thursday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park. The Tigers (8-8-2) defeated the Bluejays twice by identical 6-0 scores during the Wisconsin Valley Conference season.
“Now we need to find some offense as in the last two games we have had only one goal,” Lindner said. “The offense needs to pick it up and get back to the confidence level we were at earlier in the season.”
