Spencer summer boys basketball team rolls to title at Augusta Tournament

AUGUSTA – The Spencer High School summer basketball team won the Augusta Bean and Bacon Days Tournament on July 2-3, sweeping four games during the two days.

Spencer defeated Alma Center 58-50, Augusta 51-32 and Altoona 54-38 to reach the championship game, where it stormed back to best Blair-Taylor in overtime 67-62.

Spencer won the tournament for the second straight year and third time in the last four years.

Spencer trailed 17-1 to Blair-Taylor early in the championship match up and after cutting the deficit to 11 by halftime, the Rockets fell behind 51-31 with 6 minutes remaining.

Bobby Pilz made three 3-pointers and Nate Mercier added two from long-range to lead the Rockets’ comeback and tie the game 60-60 with 23 seconds left. Blair-Taylor failed to convert as time expired.

In overtime, Pilz scored six of Spencer’s seven points, making 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the final seconds.

Pilz had 22 points, including five 3-pointers, and five assists, and Mercier had 18 points on six 3-pointers. Ryan Busse added 10 points and Calvin Lenz had eight rebounds and three assists.
