Wausau West holds off Marshfield boys soccer

MARSHFIELD – Two first-half goals proved to be enough for Wausau West as the Warriors edged Marshfield 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer opener for both teams Tuesday at Griese Park.

Marshfield outshot West 14-8 but only managed one goal as Thomas Hogan made 13 saves for the Warriors (2-0-1 overall).

Charlie Kessil scored at the 17:39 mark and Jared Kumbera nailed home a penalty kick 15½ minutes later to put West up 2-0.

Marshfield’s Alex Sainterme, off an assist from Chris Pahl, scored for the Tigers 38 seconds into the second half, but they couldn’t muster another goal the rest of the way.

Trevyn Tham had six saves in goal for the Tigers.

Marshfield (2-3 ovearll) hosts Wausau East at 5 p.m. Thursday at Griese Park.
