Marshfield volleyball finishes strong at home Marshfield Tigers Invitational

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team opened its season by going 4-1 at its home Marshfield Tigers Invitational on Tuesday.

The Tigers finished in a three-way tie for first place with Wausau Newman Catholic and Merrill, but ended up second via a tiebreaker. Newman was declared the champion, with Merrill third.

Marshfield came back to defeat Hudson 15-25, 25-20, 15-5, beat Merrill 25-13, 21-25, 15-12, and whipped Ashland 25-17, 25-14, before losing to Newman Catholic 20-25, 19-25. The Tigers finished with a 25-17, 27-25, win over Antigo.

“I’m really pleased with how we performed in this first tournament,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “This team is just going to continue to get better and better the more they play together.”

Sophomore Stephanie Rhodes led Marshfield offensively with 31 kills. Natalie Zuelke added 19 kills and 37 digs, Ellie Fehrenbach had 17 kills, and Jenny Scheppler had 31 digs for the Tigers.

Setters Sara Dasler and Anna Ripp had 52 and 48 assists, respectively. Dasler added nine service aces in the five matches.

Marshfield will play in the two-day Sun Prairie Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
