MARSHFIELD – Gunnar Yonker’s goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half was the game’s only score, lifting D.C. Everest to a 1-0 win over Marshfield in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer matchup Monday at Griese Park.

The game was rescheduled from last Thursday after heavy rain made the field at Griese Park unplayable.

Marshfield outshot D.C. Everest 12-7 overall and 8-5 on goal, but couldn’t get a shot past Evergreens’ goalkeeper Alex Pagel, who had eight saves.

Yonker’s goal came after a deflected hand ball on a Marshfield defender.

Trevyn Tham saved four shots for the Tigers, who fall to 5-5-1 and 1-2-1 in the Valley. Everest is now 3-3-1 and 2-1 in the WVC.

Marshfield coach Steve McCann cited a strong defensive effort by Zach Leggon, Austin Christianson, Brandon Meyer, Tyler Andres and Don Duong helped keep the Tigers within striking distance.

“Captains Ryan Hayes and Jake Limmex are setting the tone and getting the intensity ramped up,” McCann said. “I am pleased by the progress of the team thus far in the season. I look forward to getting back on the practice field after four consecutive games and working on a few details that still need to be improved.”

Marshfield plays at Stevens Point at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Portage County Soccer Complex.
