Spencer volleyball goes 5-0, wins title at Auburndale Invitational; Apaches finish third

AUBURNDALE – Spencer went a perfect 5-0 and didn’t lose a single game, rolling to the championship at the Auburndale Volleyball Invitational on Saturday at Auburndale High School.

Spencer defeated Stevens Point Pacelli 25-11, 25-16; Auburndale 25-17, 25-23; Prentice 25-14, 25-19; Iola-Scandinavia 25-21, 25-17; and Mosinee 25-22, 25-14.

Marisa Johnson had 32 kills and 82 digs to lead the Rockets in both categories. Brooke Kettleborough had 95 assists, Macie Weber added 31 kills, 10 blocks and six aces, and Julie Berres had 13 aces for Spencer.

“All 12 girls really gave it their all throughout the day,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We had our ups and downs, but they always kept battling. They deserved those first-place medals.”

Auburndale went 4-1 to finish third with its only loss to Spencer. The Apaches beat Iola-Scandinavia 25-12, 25-12; Stevens Point Pacelli 25-15, 25-23; Marshfield Columbus Catholic 25-9, 25-12; and Stratford 25-10, 25-16.

Mosinee also finished 4-1 and finished second.

Shannon Yahnke had 36 kills, Taylor Gotz added 24, and Jenna Peplinski had 23 kills and 29 digs for Auburndale. Cheyenne Karl had a team-high 36 digs and Sydney Schmutzer had 92 assists for Auburndale.

Stratford and Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s results were not provided.

Auburndale hosts Wausau Newman Catholic on Tuesday, while Spencer is off until Thursday when it plays at Loyal/Granton.
