STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team will be playing for a trip to the WIAA State Tournament.

Columbus’ Charles Payant scored on an assist from Sean McCarthy with 1:13 remaining in the game to beat Stevens Point Pacelli 2-1 in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal Thursday night at the Portage County Soccer Complex.

The Dons (15-4-3) will play Barron (16-4-1) in a Division 4 sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Griese Park in Marshfield. The winner advances to the 2014 WIAA State Boys Soccer Tournament in Milwaukee on Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

Ryan Dieringer scored early to put the Dons up 1-0 before Pacelli tied it back up before halftime.

Payant’s game-winner came following a pair of saves late by Dons’ goalkeeper Evan Hansen that kept it even. Hansen finished with five saves.

Columbus Catholic held a 15-6 advantage on shots on goal and 7-3 in corner kicks.

Columbus Catholic will be looking to advance to the state tournament for just the second time in the program’s history. The Dons reached the 2006 tournament, losing a Division 3 semifinal. Barron made it to the state tournament a year ago for the first time, also losing in the semifinals.
