FORT ATKINSON – The Marshfield boys basketball team saw highs and lows during its 2014-15 season-opener Friday night and came up short in double overtime, losing a nonconference game 62-58 to Waukesha Catholic Memorial at the Fort HealthCare Classic at Fort Atkinson High School.
The Tigers overcame an early 11-point deficit to take a 13-point lead at halftime, but couldn’t hold on as Catholic Memorial (1-0) forced overtime.
The Crusaders led 17-12 after one quarter before Marshfield put on a 20-2 run in the second quarter to take a double-digit lead.
Catholic Memorial used a 17-5 advantage in the fourth quarter to push the game to overtime.
Marshfield ran off the final 50 seconds of the first overtime period, but a jumper missed at the buzzer.
Marshfield’s Adam Fravert hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 1:01 to go in the second OT to tie the game at 58-58, but the Tigers wouldn’t score again.
The Crusaders outscored Marshfield 4-0 in the final minute , sealing the win on a steal and layup by Robby Gogin with 7 seconds left. Gogin led all scorers with 20 points.
Tanner Boson had 16 points and Fravert finished with 12 for the Tigers. Will Spindler added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds, and sophomore Alec Hinson scored eight points in his varsity debut for Marshfield.
Marshfield plays Hortonville at Fort Atkinson at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
