AUBURNDALE – Wisconsin Rapids Assumption jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and used a big advantage at the free throw line to send the Auburndale girls basketball team to its first loss, winning 62-40 in a Marawood Conference South Division game Thursday night at Auburndale High School.
Assumption (6-2, 3-1 Marawood South) led 22-9 after the first quarter and opened up a 51-24 lead after three quarters.
The Royals made 21 of 29 free throws and shot 53 percent (19 of 36) from the field. Auburndale, on the other hand, struggled in both aspects. The Apaches made just 14 of 44 shots from the floor and were 12 of 26 on free throws as they fall to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Gena Grundhoffer had 21 points and Macie Zurfluh had 17 points and eight rebounds for Assumption. The two combined to make 13 of 15 free throws.
Taylor Gotz had 12 points and six rebounds to top Auburndale.
The Apaches play at Pittsville on Monday.
