MERRILL – The Marshfield softball team rebounded with a disappointing defeat on Thursday with a pair of lopsided nonconference wins at Merrill on Saturday.

The Tigers beat Merrill 15-0 and 17-7 in a doubleheader to improve to 7-3 on the season and erase the bad taste left after a 12-11, 10-inning loss to Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.

Rhiannon Baierl threw a two-hit, five-inning shutout in the first game, striking out one and walking two.

Andie Varsho was 4-for-4, Taylor Varsho was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Baierl and Lindsey Duerr each had two hits for the Tigers in Game 1.

In Game 2, Scout Meyer struck out two in a complete-game victory for the Tigers. Taylor Varsho had two hits, including a triple, Haley Lenz had a triple and two RBIs, and Raelynn Wingert and Sara Sturomski each had two hits for Marshfield.

“Overall, we had a good day offensively,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “Rhiannon did an exceptional job pitching in the first game. Offensively, it seems like everybody was hitting the ball hard and making contact.”

Marshfield hosts Rhinelander on Tuesday, plays at Wausau West on Thursday and hosts Hudson in a nonconference doubleheader next Saturday.
