ABBOTSFORD – Spencer had eight wrestlers reach the finals and four walk away with titles, but the Rockets came up just short of the team title as they finished second at the 2015 Cloverbelt Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Abbotsford High School.
The Rockets went 6-0 to win the dual-meet conference championship and were searching for their first conference tournament title since winning the Marawood Conference Tournament in 1999.
Spencer grabbed four individual titles but came up 17 points short of Stanley-Boyd/Thorp/Owen-Withee for the team title. SBTOW won with 241.5 points, with Spencer second with 224.5 points.
Daniel Wilke, Nathan Neumann, Hunter Hildebrandt and Hunter Luepke won championships for the Rockets.
Wilke (34-6) won a major decision over Tony Borowski of Stanley-Boyd/Thorp/Owen-Withee 18-6 to win the 138-pound title.
Nathan Neumann (27-13) edged Derek Nielsen of Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal 4-3 to take the 145-pound championship.
Hunter Hilidebrandt (24-13) rolled to the 152-pound title for the Rockets, winning a major decision over Brandon Nitz of SBTOW 11-2.
Freshman Hunter Luepke (35-4) won the final title for Spencer with a major decision over Jeffrey Breaker of Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Altoona/Fall Creek) 12-1.
Dominick Wichlacz (106 pounds), Bryce Shaw (113), Austin Post (126) and Zach Schneider (182) each finished second for the Rockets.
Tim Bauer (132) and Caden Schillinger (120) both finished third for Spencer.
Spencer will compete in the WIAA Division 3 regional next Saturday, Feb. 14, at Auburndale. The top two finishers in each weight class move on to the WIAA Division 3 individual sectional at Shawano on Feb. 21. The top team will wrestle in the WIAA Division 3 team sectional at Amherst on Feb. 17.
