AUBURNDALE – Stratford had five individual champions and advanced eight wrestlers in all to next week’s sectional to capture the team title at the 2015 WIAA Division 3 regional on Saturday at Auburndale High School.
The Tigers compiled 237 points to easily out-distance second-place Edgar (189 points) and Spencer (172.5), and will move on to the WIAA Division 3 team sectional on Tuesday at Amherst. Stratford will wrestle a dual meet with Amherst, with the winner advancing to the sectional championship against the winner of the Crandon-Coleman match. The champion earns a spot in the 2015 WIAA State Team Wrestling Championships on March 6-7 in Madison.
A.J. Schoenfuss (39-2 at 106 pounds), Jeremy Schoenherr (36-1 at 113), Mason Kauffman (41-0 at 126), Kamren Bornbach (34-3 at 182) and Hunter Kauffman (35-1 at 220) each earned regional championships for Stratford.
Also qualifying for the Division 3 individual sectional on Feb. 21 at Shawano for Stratford were Anthony Gliniecki (29-2 at 120), David Marquardt (27-8 at 138) and Tyson Kauffman (27-10 at 285).
The top two finishers on Saturday move on to the individual sectional, with the top three at the sectional qualifying for the 2015 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Championships at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 26-28.
Spencer had a pair of regional champions and two other wrestlers finish second to move on to the sectional.
Tim Bauer (27-13) knocked off Stratford’s Sam Wenzel 7-5 in overtime in the 132-pound championship match. Wenzel went on to lose a second-place wrestleback and was eliminated.
Freshman Hunter Luepke (38-4) also grabbed a regional title for the Rockets, the Cloverbelt Conference regular-season champion, by defeating Kurt Jankowski of Auburndale 4-2 in overtime.
Bryce Shaw and Zach Schneider worked their way back through the brackets to finish second for the Rockets, giving them four sectional qualifiers.
Shaw (23-17) won a third-place match at 113 pounds and took care of Colton Heil of Edgar in a second-place wrestleback 6-3.
Schneider (33-12) also had to win a second-place wrestleback and defeated Tannor Frahm of Athens 2-1 at 170 pounds.
In addition to Jankowski (24-8), who took second at 195 pounds, Auburndale had three other sectional qualifiers.
Wyatt Weiler (37-6) won the 160-pound championship by injury default, and Paul Willfahrt (39-4) defeated Austin Engel of Athens 7-5 to take the 145-pound title.
Dylan Altmann (26-15) finished second at 126 pounds, losing in the championship match to undefeated Mason Kauffman of Stratford.
