Athens upsets Spencer boys basketball

ATHENS – Athens outscored Spencer by five points in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 48-47 upset for the Rockets in a nonconference boys basketball game Monday night at Athens High School.

Spencer led 35-31 after three quarters before the Bluejays rallied in the fourth quarter with a 17-12 run.

Athens is now just 4-15, while Spencer falls to 15-3.

Mitch Susa had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Nate Mercier added 12 for Spencer.

Athens shot 50 percent (18 of 36) and won despite making just 8 of 17 free throws. Spencer struggled even more at the free throw line, making just 6 of 15 shots.

The Rockets play at Gilman on Tuesday. Spencer can clinch a share of the Cloverbelt Conference East Division championship with a victory.
