AMHERST – Coleman rallied by winning six of the last seven matches and beat Stratford 35-31 in a WIAA Division 3 team wrestling sectional final on Tuesday night at Amherst High School.
The Tigers reached the final with a 51-30 victory over Amherst, and Coleman defeated Crandon 48-33, in sectional semifinals.
Stratford led the Falcons 28-6 after winning five of the first seven matches.
Stratford’s Tyson Kauffman started the match with an 11-2 major decision over Donovan Salewski at 285 pounds, and Jake Drexler (106) and A.J. Schoenfuss (112) each won by pin to put the Tigers up 14-0.
Anthony Gliniecki (126) and Mason Kauffman (138) also won by pin as Stratford built a big lead. Mason Kauffman, a sophomore, is now 43-0 this season.
Coleman won the next two matches by major decision and the following two by pin, and another by decision to take a 29-28 lead.
Stratford’s Kamren Bornbach defeated Hunter Stodola 9-3 at 195 pounds to put the Tigers back on top, setting up a final match and a winner-take-all scenario.
Hunter Kauffman, who had a 36-1 record entering the match, was pinned by C.J. Pillath (37-3) of Coleman with 1 second to go in the second period to give the Cougars the victory.
The semifinal match started with the 220-pound match and Stratford’s Hunter Kauffman pinned Dylan Kearney in 2:52.
The Tigers won the next eight matches as well to clinch the victory. Stratford forfeited the final five matches to rest for the final.
Stratford’s Jon Aguirre (285), Dilan Dehlinger (113), Gliniecki (120), Jordan Becker (126), Mason Kauffman (132) and Sam Wenzel (138) also won by pin against Amherst.
