COLBY – For the first time in eight seasons, and only the second time in half a century, the Spencer boys basketball team is conference champions.

Spencer used a huge second-quarter run to pull ahead and defeat Colby 58-40 in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Friday night at Colby High School.

The Rockets outscored Colby 25-12 in the second quarter to take a 33-16 halftime lead and cruised to the victory from there.

Spencer won its second game in a row and improves to 17-3 overall and 14-1 in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division, securing the regular-season title. The conference championship is Spencer’s first since tying for the Marawood South title in 2006-07 with Pittsville and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, and first outright championship since winning the Marawood Conference title in 1963-64.

Junior guard Bobby Pilz scored 19 points, Calvin Lenz added 13 and Miles Weber had 10 for the Rockets.

Zach Meyer scored 11 points to lead Colby (5-15, 5-10 Cloverbelt East).

Spencer wraps up its Cloverbelt East season with Senior Night on Monday against Marshfield Columbus Catholic. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com at 7:30 p.m.
