Auburndale High School senior boys basketball player Matt Nikolay has been voted as the WDLB-WOSQ Radio & MarshfieldAreaSports.com March High School Athlete of the Month.
The High School Athlete of the Month Award is sponsored by Marshfield Clinic, Cost Cutters Family Hair Care and Burt Trophy & Awards.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Nikolay, a guard, scored 70 points in Auburndale’s five WIAA postseason games in March.
Nikolay had 16 points and seven rebounds in a regional semifinal win over Spencer on March 6, scored 17 against Marathon in a regional final March 7, and had 14 and 15 points, respectively, in sectional victories over Crivitz and Brillion to lift the Apaches to the state tournament. In a Division 4 state semifinal at the Kohl Center in Madison, Nikolay had eight points and six assists in a 66-59 loss to Mineral Point on March 19.
Nikolay was named the Marawood Conference South Division Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference choice, and was named to the Division 4 All-State team by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.
Other nominees for the March award were Marshfield boys basketball player Tanner Boson, Marathon girls basketball player Emily Kind, and Athens track athlete Aaron Wickman.
Nikolay joins past award winners from the 2014-15 school year: Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys soccer player Sean McCarthy (September), Columbus Catholic cross country runner Ben Behling (October), Edgar football player Zachary Pospyhalla (November), Marshfield girls basketball player Ellie Kummer (December), Athens girls basketball player Kyncaide Diedrich (January), and Edgar wrestler Devin Lemanski (February).
