STEVENS POINT – Martha Kupfer set a new Marshfield High School girls indoor record in the 800 meters to finish second and also grabbed the Tigers’ lone individual conference gold medal in the triple jump at the 2015 Wisconsin Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Meet on Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Kupfer took second in the 800 with a time of 2:26.19, breaking a 37-year-old school record in the event that was set in 1978 by Deanna Schmidt.
Kupfer won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, ½ inch, and also took third in the long jump (15-9) for the Tigers, who placed fourth as a team with 77 points.
“The girls stepped up big time tonight,” Marshfield coach Dan Akin said. “We asked a lot of them and they delivered. We scored in all of our field events. Martha ran a brilliant race in the 800 meters and went out hard to get herself another school record. She has worked hard for this.”
Kupfer, a senior, was also part of the 800 relay team, along with Ashley Holubets, Courtney Brown and Meg Bryan, that finished second in 1:53.05.
Bryan, a freshman, was second in the triple jump (34-2¼) and fourth in the long jump (15-2), Holubets took fourth in the 200 hurdles (32.24), and the 1,600 relay team of Alexa Aumann, Maddie Nikolai, Brown and Holubets was third in 4:27.92.
The Marshfield boys tied Merrill for fifth place with 52 points.
Tyler Peterson had the Tigers’ boys top finish, taking second in the shot put with a toss of 46-10¼.
Chris Paul was third in the triple jump (40-11) and sixth in the long jump (19-1), Will Spindler took third in the 55 hurdles (8.60), and Calden Wojt was fourth in both the 200 (23.46) and 400 (53.12) for Marshfield’s other top finishes.
Stevens Point won the boys team title for the fourth straight season, and the Point girls also won the team championship.
