ATHENS – Athens High School senior Shane Coker has has been named the 2014-15 WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com High School Athlete of the Year.
Coker was chosen by WDLB-WOSQ Radio and MarshfieldAreaSports.com staff for the award, which is also sponsored by Burt Trophy & Awards, Marshfield Clinic and Cost Cutters Family Hair Care of Marshfield.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools were eligible for the award: Abbotsford, Athens, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Neillsville, Owen-Withee, Pittsville, Spencer, Stratford and Thorp.
Coker capped off his athletic career at Athens by being chosen as the co-state player of the year by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association in June. He shared the award with Rudy Rott of La Crosse Aquinas and Logan Wonn of Oconomowoc.
Coker, who will play baseball next year at the University of Akron, was a first-team all-state selection by the WBCA and the Marawood Conference North Division Player of the Year in both 2014 and 2015.
This past season, Coker hit .694 with a .939 slugging percentage, 28 RBIs, and 32 runs scored. He also went 6-1 pitching with a 1.19 earned-run average, striking out 71 in 53 innings.
As a member of Athens’ football team, Coker was a first-team all-Cloverwood Conference selection at four positions in the fall of 2014 – punter, kicker, linebacker and tight end – and was named Cloverwood Defensive Player of the Year.
Coker was Athens’ top receiver, catching 20 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 123 total tackles (103 solo), with five quarterback sacks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions.
Coker had his basketball season cut short after just six games. He averaged 13 points and six rebounds a game, while shooting 58 percent from the floor for the Bluejays.
