MARSHFIELD – Second-half goals by Shelbey Krug and Mckenzie Lyzne lifted Wisconsin Rapids to a 3-1 win over Marshfield in Wisconsin Valley Conference girls soccer action Thursday at Griese Park.
The loss is the Tigers’ sixth in WVC action without a win and drops them to 2-9-1 overall. Rapids improves to 4-3.
After Lexi Panko scored just three minutes into the game for Wisconsin Rapids, but Marshfield battled back as Allison Gruen scored her third goal in WVC play this season on an assist from Emily Wolfe at the 9:57 mark.
The score remained 1-1 for more than 45 minutes before Rapids finally broke through when Krug scored in the 54th minute. Lyzne added another at the 5:15 later to account for the final score.
Marshfield had something to prove after an 8-0 whitewashing at the hands of the Raiders earlier this season in Wisconsin Rapids.
“We continue to improve and show marked improvement,” Marshfield assistant coach Steve Lindner said. “The girls gave it their all the entire game. We played one of our better games of the year. The coaching staff looks at the effort put forth in a game like tonight and can only praise the squad for their efforts.”
Marshfield played another strong game defensively, and midfielders Myranda Schmidt, Abigail Brock, Emily Haws, Emily Brix and Kallie Mayer helped the Tigers mount some offensive as well.
“The defense is our strength, but the midfield progression has opened up things for the offense, and keep the Tigers in each game,” Lindner said.
Marshfield hosts Stevens Point at 5 p.m. Monday at Griese Park in a game that was postponed by a thunderstorm on Tuesday. The Tigers then travel to Wausau West on Tuesday.
