STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys soccer team finally broke through with a complete effort, blanking Stevens Point 4-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup Thursday at the Portage County Soccer Complex.

Hunter McManus, Gabe Ronan and Kaylob Croston scored first-half goals for the Tigers, and Leo Steiner added the capper 20 minutes into the second half.

The win is Marshfield’s first of the season as it improves to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the WVC. Stevens Point is now 5-2 and 2-1 in conference play. Point had shut out all of its opponents in its five wins.

Mathias Holm had 12 saves in goal for the Tigers. Luke McCann had a pair of assists and Alec Hinson had another in the win.

“The defense played solid, led by Collin Nikolai, Scott Berg, Klaus Friedli, Nathan Carlson and Roman Tibbett, and Mathias Holm was outstanding in net to earn the shutout,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “He did a great job of communicating and assisting the defense vocally. Offensively, the team attacked well. Kaylob Croston had his first start on varsity at wing and had a superb game.”

Marshfield will be back in action Thursday with a home match against Wisconsin Rapids. The game starts at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
